The easiest way to get what you want or become the person that you want to be, is to just doing the things that version of yourself does - it’s timeline jumping. A great way to start stepping into this is by creating an alter ego. Ariana Grande wanted to become a pop star and have radio stations around the world playing her music - so she became a pop star by creating the “Ariana Grande Popstar Character”. It’s like designing an avatar in a video game - she made her signature “thing” be a long ponytail and winged eyeliner and then dressed in a different color palette for each album “era” - because that’s what she observed popstars doing. Style and clothes are so important to our identity because it makes us recognizable and is a visual representation of how we feel on the inside, externally. The path to creating an alter ego encompasses style but first you have to define the identity you want to embrace. Some questions to ask:
(switch the “she/her” pronoun to that of your choosing - the same concepts apply for all)
-
What does she do?
-
Where does she go?
-
Who does she hang around with?
-
What career does she have?
-
What are her philosophies on life?
-
What does she value and prioritize?
-
What does she want the world to know about her just by looking at her?
-
What do you want to call into your life? Peace? More energy? Minimalism? Ease? To be a Soccer mom? To be a city girl & career woman?
and then last but not least,
-
What does she wear? - What silhouettes? What colors? What brands?
Developing an alter ego allows you to use your clothing as a way to get into “character” every morning through the ritual of getting dressed - not unlike an actor getting into costume before a show. Find someone who has the traits or the life you want and look at photos of them to see if anything resonates with you.
Something else that can help in the character development process is to have one identifiable/signature thing about you - often times for people in the entertainment industry, this is something that is slightly larger than life - Anya Taylor Joy’s strikingly blonde hair, Ariana Grande’s really long ponytail, Kim Kardashian’s bum, etc.
If you don’t immediately know what your alter ego would wear, try different things out. If it doesn’t resonate, then onto the next. What pieces do you always find yourself reaching for in your closet and why? What do they make you feel? Some great tools for trying out different styles, colors, and silhouettes are clothing rental services - Nuuly, Rent the Runway, etc.
